A huge melting pot of caricature artists from around the world. Glorious, facial, mischieving, mayhem on an international scale!

Destination - San Antonio, Texas USA!

A few weeks ago, I was one of over 150 other caricaturists who were lucky enough to attend the amazing 2012 'International Society of Caricature Artists' convention in Texas! My first, ever! Wow, what a fantastic, awe-inspiring, week it was too!

The week consisted of many wonderful activities including workshops, business ideas, speakers, competitions, presentations, auctions, and of course... amazing caricature illustrations! By the end of the week, the whole room had been transformed into a mulit-coloured spectacle of incredible, crazy-face artwork!

During the week, I was lucky enough to sit next to one of my favourite caricature artists, who I have admired for a long time - Angie Jordan (shown here, on the right, with her amazing caricature of yours truly). I got a huge kick out of watching her create some amazing caricatures throughout the week. A huge thank you has to go to all of the other artists too, Steve Hearn who let me know about the wonders of the ISCA and all of the organisors and helpers of the event who truly made this week so special for all of us. I left the event raring to get back to work, inspired by the knowledge gleaned from the week plus the new friendships made. See more from the week at my Facebook page here.

Biking for Bestie

Luke Spencer-Harrop, Ben 'Quiff' Williams and Philip Givens recently completed the incredible task of scaling the three peaks and then cycling from Snowdon home to Eastington, Gloucestershire. This was the chaps second challenge finished for the memory of their great friend, Andy 'Bestie' Best. Phillipa was there also to provide valuable support to the guys. Andy's mum, Faye, with family and friends, were at the finish line to welcome them all home with a well earned celebration party!

Their 3 peaks adventure also helped raise money on behalf of Cotswold Care, of whom helped Andy to be in his own home when he passed away from cancer. Without they're wonderfull help he would of had to stay in hospital. Andy called them his angels. If you can spare any small amount of cash to help them with this wonderful cause, it would make their day.

Terrific tour guides tooned in tunnel!

We've just returned from a short but amazing trip to France on a tour of Normandy and the D Day landing sites. It was run by Steve and Susan Cocks of Guided Battlefield Tours Ltd, and I would highly recommend them to anyone who is interested in battlefield history. Susan was always there with a friendly smile ensuring comfort throughout the trip and Steve enthralled us with his vivid accounts of the battles to liberate France, and it was an incredibly humbling experience to hear the stories of true bravery of the soldiers and the sacrifices they made.

During the long coach journey, I wasn't idle as I took the opportunity to
create some 'thank you' caricatures of our guides and presented them in the Eurotunnel on the way home.

Pooch 'on-the-spot' caricature challenge!

An amazing day of hot sunshine and four-legged friends at Gloucester park on the 12th of May. Hundred's of dog owners attended the first 'Paws on Patrol' - Safer Gloucester’s brand new initiative for dog walkers to keep eyes and ears open (by registering and become a “lookout”) whilst walking in their neighbourhoods each day.

The day consisted of a steady flow of furry customers, the day made a real change from the usual subjects I get to pose for me!

One of the most well-behaved subjects t draw yesterday was 'Jess', the German Sheppard (shown on the right). She sat absolutely still for me, for at least 10 minutes, all by herself with her owner looking on! What a star.

Healing through art

Just returned from a good friend's fantastic gallery - A collection of intimate oil and pastel portraits by artist Russell Haines. I jumped at the chance to support him in a small way, by offering free caricatures to his guests throughout the evening.

Russell had a stroke in June 2010 and as part of his rehabilitation was introduced to Art Lift, a local art therapy class by his Doctor. Russell had started to draw at home in private and realising it was the one thing he could still physically do that would also calm him down when he was fru
strated that his body couldn’t do what he wanted it to do.

Adults with a range of mental health issues or that were in need of rehabilitation in some way have benefited from Art Lift in the last few years but unfortunately funding has just run out. Many of the regular attendees feature in Russell’s portrait work, most have written supporting statements which are hung beside each piece of art and they would very much like to raise awareness of the schemes benefits.

Owners do look like their pets!

Andy and his much-loved daschund 'Ronnie' have always been compared to each other, so Andy's wife, Jasmin, approached me to see what I could do for a birthday gift. I thought I'd try something a little different for her, and here's the result which caused much merriment when presented...
Pastels come to life!

A while ago a lady came up to me and asked if I could create a caricature from a photo of her son for a birthday gift. I created one while she popped off do some shopping. How fantastic to have the subject himself pop along and see me at a recent cider festival! Of course, I recognised his face immediately! Great to meet you in person Alex.

A great week at the gallery

With over 50 caricature illustrations on show, I'm proud to say that my first gallery has been a great success. It was fantastic to meet, not only friends and family, but many new faces throughout the week. I spent the week working on commissions from photos on a table in the middle of the room, occassionally breaking away to do on-the-spot caricatures for visitors. It brought a smile to my face listening to the laughter from vistors as they walked around studying my toons.

A huge thanks to everyone who worked hard to help launch the event, including the staff at the Stroud Subscription Rooms, and to all the visitors throughout the week.

Painswick 'still life'!

Wearing art in the beautiful cotswolds village of Painswick 10 July 2011

On a perfect, sunny and hot day, the 'Painswick Wearable Art' competition was THE place to be yesterday. As well as the dozens of fantastic artists who competed in the competion, there were amazing art and craft stalls, street performers and music as well as loads to eat and drink. The public arrived in their thousands and they were greeted by a very welcoming and friendly village. Personally, it was a day that I will never forget with a constant flow of fun-loving customers. If you couldn't make it this year, book a date in your diary for 2012.

Celebrating a journey of love and courage with the Smiths on 2 July 2011

I can honestly say that last night I attended the most heartwarming event I've been to. Lisa, Paul and little Tom have been through an incredible journey together battling health issues with him, and it was an honour to be a part of their charity evening in celebration of their achievements to overcome them.

Their story:
"We went for our 20 week scan and it was picked up that Tom had a very enlarged bladder caused by posterior urethral valves. The doctor passed a tube through me into Tom's bladder and bypassed the blockage. Tom was born with chronic end stage renal failure as a result of the blockage and started peritoneal dialysis when he was 10 weeks old which we did at home on a nightly basis. After 7 months Tom developed a nasty infection and had to have his dialysis line removed and started haemodialysis 3 times a week at Bristol Children's hospital. 2 weeks before his 2nd birthday Tom had a live related kidney transplant from Paul and has gone from strength to strength!!

The Third Annual Gloucestershire Sands Charity Summer Ball

A fantastic, fun evening was had at the Hatherley Manor Hotel on 3 July. Money raised during the evening went towards raising money for 'Gloucestershire Sands'. A few familliar faces turned up too, including Inspector Clouseau! He was supposed to be in charge of security but seemed to be more interested in my easel!

Many thanks to charity event organiser Michelle plus the staff at the hotel who were incredibly helpful in getting me set-up.

School of Budding Caricaturists
I recently visited a Gloucestershire school and demonstrated the art of caricaturing to some great kids.
